About mySociety mySociety is an NGO based in the UK. We build and run open-source online technologies that give people the power to get things changed. Thanks to a grant from the Omidyar Network, we also support organisations from across the world to reuse our tools in their contexts. We currently support over 40 projects worldwide.

One of the tools we help organisations set up and reuse is our Freedom of Information request software platform, called Alaveteli. The platform makes the process of making an FOI incredibly easy, and publishes all requests and responses online, creating an open archive of public knowledge. The software is named after the small Finnish town where the implementer of the first FOI law (in Sweden) lived for a while. This year is the 250th anniversary of this first FOI law. There are currently 25 installations of the Alaveteli FOI platform around the world - from Uganda to New Zealand.

Why did we choose to help Anticor Belgium

We have decided to support the Belgian organisation Anticor to develop and host the next Alaveteli installation. This was due to their strong application and their determination and passion to promote the use of Belgium’s FOI law, and to open up government information to the public.

From a technical point of view, they have a good team of 5 people who will work on the project and already have access to the datasets we need to use on the platform.

We are also impressed by their connections with journalists, who will put pressure on public authorities to respond to FOI requests, and believe that this collaboration will lead to a successful Alaveteli platform for Belgium.
